Grey System Theory

The researchers have been dealing with uncertainty for a long time until Professor L. A. Zadeh questioned the validity of two-valued logic and laid the foundation of fuzzy logic, which inspired many scholars worldwide, including Deng Julong in Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Wuhan, P. R. China.

Professor Deng Julong proposed the Grey System Theory (GST) in 1982, and since then, it has seen applications in various fields. Its two streams of Grey Relational Analysis (Grey Incidence Analysis) and Grey Forecasting have gained widespread recognition among the scholars of multiple criteria decision-making and energy forecasts both in China and abroad. Today, because of the works of Prof. Deng Julong and Prof. Liu Sifeng, the fathers of GST, the theory has become a noted theory of uncertainty analysis and managing the systems with partially known information. The International Association of Grey Systems and Uncertainty Analysis (IAGSUA) and Institute for Grey Systems Studies, China, played a crucial role in advancing this theory by providing opportunities to international scholars to learn it directly from the fathers of GST.

To further extend the outreach of IAGSUA, the Grey Systems Society of Pakistan (GSSP) was established in 2018. Seeing the rising interest of scholars in GST, the International Journal of Grey Systems (IJGS) has been established. IJGS is a truly international journal, and its editorial board comprises noted scholars of GST from different countries. It is an ambitious journal and is likely to be much ahead of where it is today!

As the saying goes, “a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step,” the GSSP believes that its one step today in the form of IJGS is likely to influence many steps in the future and will facilitate the mainstreaming of GST in the world.
